On
July 7, 2010 at 12:22 PM an 88 year old city woman reported to police
that she received a telephone call from an individual who told her that
she won $250,000.00 in a sweepstakes. The caller identified himself as a
"Michael Waters" and told her she needed to send him a copy of her
driver license to verify her identity, and two "federal agents" would be
coming to her house to deliver the prize money. The victim became
suspicious and hung up the phone. She then called the police.
Citizens should be warned that residents, primarily the elderly,
continue to receive telephone calls or letters in the mail stating that
they have won a sweepstakes. In the event of these calls, report it to
the police, and don’t give any personal information over the telephone
or send any money that is requested in order to receive a prize.
Remember, you cannot win a sweepstakes if you did not enter a
sweepstakes!
