On June 16, 2010 at
5:59 PM officers were sent to the parking lot of Jersey Lanes, 30 N.
Park Ave. on a report of a car burglary to a 2000 Jeep Cherokee. Video
surveillance showed the suspect vehicle to be a 1989 Chevy Cavalier
wagon, color gray. A pocketbook was stolen from the Cherokee. While on
scene, officers were told that a 1989 Chevy Cavalier was just stolen
from the parking lot of Kohl’s, 1900 E. Linden Ave. The vehicle from the
car burglary appeared to match the stolen vehicle. An officer then used
his cell phone to copy the picture of the suspect vehicle on the
surveillance video and sent it to the other officers on patrol. At
7:12PM, Officer Pete Hammer was at S. Stiles St. and W. Edgar Rd. when
he observed the suspect vehicle turning onto S. Stiles St. He radioed
for assistance and stopped the vehicle at N. Stiles St. & Knopf St. He
then observed a baseball bat and screwdriver laying on the front seat
along with several women’s pocketbooks and electronic items. The vehicle
was confirmed as the stolen vehicle, and the driver, Ricardo Valentine,
male, age 39, of Elizabeth, NJ, was placed under arrest. Shortly after,
police received reports that three vehicles were burglarized at Lucille
Roberts and Walmart, 1601 W. Edgar Rd. The vehicles, a 2007 Honda, 2001
VW Golf, and a 2000 Nissan Maxima, had broken windows and purses and
electronics were taken. Officers located several similar items in the
suspect’s vehicle and the investigation is continuing to determine
ownership. Mr. Valentine was charged with receiving stolen property and
transferred to the Union County Jail in lieu of $20,000.00 bail.
Additional charges are expected to be filed in the vehicle burglaries.
Mr. Valentine’s initial court appearance is June 25, 2010.
