On June 13, 2010 at
12:48 AM officer Matthew Damatta was responding to a fight call while on
the 100 block of W. Elizabeth Ave. when he was nearly struck head-on by
another vehicle, a 2005 Nissan Murano. He avoided the collision and
continued on, but soon returned to the area to look for the vehicle that
nearly struck him. He was then approached by a female, age 31, of
Linden, who told him that she was driving the Nissan with her boyfriend
in the passenger seat while they were having an argument. When they saw
the approaching police vehicle with lights and siren activated, the male
passenger grabbed the steering wheel and pushed her leg to depress the
gas pedal further, telling her, "we’re going to die head-on into the
police car". Their car then came to an abrupt stop before it was able to
strike the police car, and the female jumped out of the vehicle and ran
from the scene. Additional officers then searched for the vehicle and
found it parked on Lumber St. The male, identified as Krzystof
Jaworowski, age 33, of Linden, was asleep inside the vehicle. He was
then placed under arrest and charged with two counts of aggravated
assault, one count of terroristic threats, and nine motor vehicle
charges including DWI, refusal to submit to a breath test, reckless
driving, and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. He was
transported to the county jail in lieu of $37,500.00 bail with a court
date set for June 18, 2010.
