On
April 18, 2010 at 3:03 PM officers were sent to Walmart,1601 W. Edgar
Rd. on a report of a man fleeing the store in a red Jaguar who attempted
to use a stolen credit card. Responding officer James Carter observed
the suspect in a 2001 Jaguar S-type with Virginia license plates
travelling at a high rate of speed south on Routes 1&9 into Rahway. The
officer eventually caught up to the vehicle in Woodbridge Twp. and
pulled it over using the overhead lights. A Walmart employee was brought
to the scene where a positive identification was made of the suspect.
The employee stated the suspect, identified as a Carl Dwight Williams,
male, age 30, of Brooklyn, N.Y., attempted to purchase an X-Box 360 game
console using a gift card with an altered account number. When the card
was declined, the store clerk asked the suspect for identification at
which time he fled the store. Mr. Williams was found to be in possession
of sixteen gift cards from Visa, American Express, and Toys R Us which
are also suspected to be stolen or counterfeit. He was charged with
credit card theft, fraudulent use of a credit card, and theft by
deception. After he was placed under arrest and put in a patrol vehicle,
he kicked the rear window with his foot damaging the window frame
resulting in an additional charge of criminal mischief. His total bail
was set at $13,826.00, which included a New Brunswick contempt warrant.
His court date is set for April 23, 2010 at Union County Central Intake.
The investigation is continuing by the police department’s Detective
Bureau.
