RE: Weapon Arrest

On April 11, 2010 at 11:06 PM officers were doing radar on W. Elizabeth Ave. when they clocked a 2005 Acura doing 43 MPH in a 25MPH zone while travelling west. After the vehicle was stopped, the driver, Darius Xavier El Bey, male, age 37, of Rahway, was checked for warrants and found to be wanted on contempt charges from Newark, Hillside, and Maplewood, total bail $2,405.00. Prior to the vehicle being towed from the scene, Officer Javier Perez checked the glove compartment for ownership papers because the vehicle was not registered to Mr. El-Bey. Officer Perez discovered a loaded Smith & Wesson handgun, model 915, in the glove box. A check of the gun’s serial number revealed it was stolen from Maplewood in August of 2006. Mr. El-Bey was additionally charged with unlawful possession of a handgun and receiving stolen property, total bail on the new charges is $35,000.00 full cash pending an April 19th court date in Union County. He is being held in the municipal jail pending transfer to Union County Jail. The investigation is continuing by the Detective Bureau.
