On
April 11, 2010 at 11:06 PM officers were doing radar on W. Elizabeth
Ave. when they clocked a 2005 Acura doing 43 MPH in a 25MPH zone while
travelling west. After the vehicle was stopped, the driver, Darius
Xavier El Bey, male, age 37, of Rahway, was checked for warrants and
found to be wanted on contempt charges from Newark, Hillside, and
Maplewood, total bail $2,405.00. Prior to the vehicle being towed from
the scene, Officer Javier Perez checked the glove compartment for
ownership papers because the vehicle was not registered to Mr. El-Bey.
Officer Perez discovered a loaded Smith & Wesson handgun, model 915, in
the glove box. A check of the gun’s serial number revealed it was stolen
from Maplewood in August of 2006. Mr. El-Bey was additionally charged
with unlawful possession of a handgun and receiving stolen property,
total bail on the new charges is $35,000.00 full cash pending an April
19th court date in Union County. He is being held in the
municipal jail pending transfer to Union County Jail. The investigation
is continuing by the Detective Bureau.
