On
March 26, 2010 at 11:56AM officers were sent to the Family Dollar store,
1600 E. St. George Ave. on a report of a purse snatch. A witness,
female, age 39, of Elizabeth, told police that a male black, wearing a
dark-colored leather jacket and hooded-sweatshirt grabbed a pocketbook
out of a shopping cart and fled on foot east on E. St. George Ave. The
pocketbook belonged to a Family Dollar customer, female, age 86, from
Rahway. Minutes later, officers William Knapp and Charles Gallo, who
were in an unmarked patrol car on N. Park Ave., observed an individual
fitting the description of the suspect, which was broadcast on the
police radio, and stopped him. The witness was brought to the scene
where a positive identification was made. Daniel Bailey, male, age 21,
of Elizabeth, was arrested and charged with theft. The pocketbook was
recovered at Dill Ave. and Garfield St. without $193.00 in cash that the
suspect took. Mr. Bailey was held on $10,000.00 cash bail and taken to
the Union County Jail with a court date set for April 2, 2010.
