RE: Eluding/Resisting Arrest

On January 14, 2010 at 11:05 AM, Rahway Police informed Linden Police that they were pursuing a 2000 Audi A6 northbound on Routes 1&9 into Linden. The Audi was observed by Linden officers Anthony Lordi and Mark Evan turning onto S. Stiles St. The officers attempted to give chase to the vehicle when the Audi lost control and struck a tree on S. Stiles St. and W. 17th St. The driver, later identified as Mark Humes, male, age 40, of East Orange, attempted to flee the scene on foot. Both officers chased him and caught up to him when a struggle ensued and all three persons fell to the ground. Officer Lordi, age 37, felt a pain in his leg, and was later taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway for treatment of a fractured left ankle. Mr. Humes then broke free and ran a short distance away before he was apprehended by Officer Pete Kozak. Mr. Humes continued to resist arrest until additional officers arrived to subdue and handcuff him. Officer Evan, age 51, complained of shoulder pain and abrasions to his knees and lower legs. Officer Kozak, age 32, also had abrasions to his lower legs and knees. Both officers were taken to the Emergi-Care Center for medical treatment and released. Mr. Humes was charged with eluding police, resisting arrest (2 counts), and obstruction. He received motor vehicle summonses for driving with a suspended license, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident. His bail was set at $60,000.00 with a court date set for January 25, 2010 at Union County Central Intake. He was turned over to Rahway Police for their initial investigation.
