The
Linden Police Department’s Over the Limit, Under Arrest, anti-drunk
driving enforcement holiday campaign is being hailed as a success.
"We
had a good campaign" said Sgt. Michael Babulski, Commander of the
Traffic Bureau.
During the crackdown period, which started on Dec. 7th and ended Jan.
3rd, department wide there were 17 DWI arrests, and a total of 294
tickets were written. The number of DWI arrests were up 7 from last
year’s crackdown. DWI enforcement officers also stopped a vehicle where
the driver was arrested charged with possession of marijuana, possession
of CDS paraphernalia, possession of a prohibited weapon (brass knuckles)
and unlawful possession of a handgun which was loaded.
During the 2008-2009 holiday campaign, the department had written 279
tickets and had 10 DWI arrests during the same time period, Sgt.
Babulski said.
He credited the increase in DWI arrests by utilizing more unmarked
vehicles this year than in previous ones.
Total DWIs arrest for
the year were up 9% from last year. There were 109 arrests in 2008
compared to 119 in 2009.
