In honor of Black History Month, Linden Mayor Derek Armstead will recognize and present NFL Pro Bowler, current member of NY Jets, and community philanthropist, Muhammad Wilkerson, with “Key to the City,” Tuesday, February 20, 2018, 7:00 p.m. - 7:15 p.m., at Linden City Hall during the City Council meeting. The next day, Wednesday, February 21, 12:00 p.m. - 12:15 p.m., Mayor Armstead will present Wilkerson with the Wilkerson Way road sign to be placed, for 30 days, between N. Wood Avenue & E. Blancke Streets, in front of Linden City Hall.
“It is an honor to acknowledge and present these recognitions to Muhammad during Black History Month,” said Mayor Armstead. “Muhammad attended our public schools and grew up here. To us, he is more than a NFL Pro Bowler and current member of the NY Jets. His social responsibility through philanthropy and the time he gives to the city, students, residents and the community, instilled in him through his faith and mother, Mrs. Janice Wilkerson, speak volumes to the impact that Muhammad and other athletes have on a community and society,” said Mayor Armstead.
“On behalf of Muhammad, the Wilkerson family and TEAM 96, we thank the Mayor Armstead for these recognitions,” said Mrs. Janice Wilkerson.
Mayor Armstead, Linden’s first African American mayor since the town’s incorporation in 1925, has known and supported Muhammad and the Wilkerson family for over 20 years. “These city recognitions are a part of a bigger plan that’s in store for Muhammad. I know the students and residents are happy and grateful for all that he does for our community,” added Mayor Armstead.
Through his TEAM 96 organization, Wilkerson helps college-bound athletes by volunteering his time, and making donations. He also holds a free football camp each year; hosts bowling events scholarship fundraisers; and he does various outreach programs including providing holiday baskets for the community. This past November, Linden High School retired Wilkerson’s school jersey #91, during a jersey retirement celebration at Tiger Stadium at Cooper Field in Linden.
