Phillips 66 Bayway Refinery Supports Rutgers Flood Mitigation Effort in Linden

AAA - 4/25/2017 4:55:46 PM

Phillips 66 Bayway Refinery has donated $60,000 for a project spearheaded by Rutgers University and the City of Linden, New Jersey, to install a rain garden that will mitigate flooding in Linden’s Tremley Point neighborhood. A natural water filter, the rain garden will also restore wetlands and improve the local ecosystem and recreational space.

Faculty members and students from the Rutgers School of Engineering are now working with Linden’s city engineer—Rutgers School of Engineering alumnus George Vircik—and a local consultant to design and construct the garden. The 50 feet long by 40 feet wide ground depression will intercept and slow down storm water runoff from paved and other hard areas while filtering out dog-produced pathogens from a nearby dog park. Native plants planted by local volunteers will assist the process and also provide food and habitat for birds, butterflies, and other pollinators. The City of Linden will maintain the garden with guidance from the Rutgers team.

Unity Tour 2017

Police - 4/25/2017 4:10:00 PM

Linden will have 11 Officers participating this year’s Unity Tour event on May 9, 2017, and for the first time Linden has been designated as an official stop. Over 2000 riders will attend a ceremony at the WTC where Ofc. Padilla, Inv. Hammer,  Inv. Kahana, and Ofc. Guzman will be awarded the medal of Valor by Chapter 37 of the Police Unity Tour. It is the first time the award will be given, and because it involves a terroristic incident it is particularly meaningful to the members of Chapter 37, which was started by Port Authority Police Officers in 2002 in honor of the 37 PAPD Officers killed at the WTC on September 11th.

As the riders arrive in Linden they will ceremoniously travel down Wood Ave. The four Officers will again be presented the award in front of their family, friends, and coworkers during a ceremony featuring the LHS marching Band, ROTC and Madrigals singing group.  A number of dignitaries are expected to attend, including Congressman Donald Payne.
