Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA) based in Scotch Plains, NJ servicing western Union County, donated a park bench to the City of Linden, NJ as part of their 1908 Playground Mobilization Day project held on Saturday, May 21st, 2016 at 9:08 a.m.
Alpha Kappa Sorority is the first African American Sorority founded on January 15th 1908. Sorority Members across the world will Restore, Refresh, and Renew 1,908 playgrounds & community spaces for children by 2018.
Linden New Jersey’s Mayor Derek Armstead and AKA Chapter President Ms. MaryAnn Anderson did the honors of cutting the ribbon and presenting the new bench to the Community of Linden on Saturday morning promptly at 9:08 a.m.
The Chapter’s Vice President & Program Chairman, Deana L. Lawson reached out to Director of Public Property & Community Services Mr. Al MacDonald several months ago and asked “where can we make an impact?” Mr. MacDonald directed Ms. Lawson to School #8 located at 500 W. Blancke St. The green Park Bench is located directly across from Linden Elementary School #8 in Linden NJ.
Sorority Members, Community Members along with the Sorority’s A.S.C.E.N.D. Students participated in this initiative to restore, refresh and renew a now inviting place for School #8 students as well as Linden Community Members.
